Retail Catchment Area

The City of Bathurst provides retail goods and services to a regional catchment area which extends up to 200km north and south west of the City, up to 150km south and east of the City and 60km west of the City.

The city has approximately 85,000 square metres of goods and services floorspace with approximately 90% contained within the CBD.

There are three major shopping Centres - MetroPlaza, Stocklands and the recently developed Bathurst City Centre which opened in 2009. These centres maintain a high level of interaction, provide regional level retailing attractions for the City and in effect act as a "Super Centre". These centres create a retail core generally located at the intersection of William and Howick Streets.

CBD - Localised Surburb Centres

The retail goods and services floor space distribution is heavily concentrated in the CBD, which provides the City's regional level attractions and most of the weekly and convenience facilities. There are also local centres servicing residential areas around the City including Westpoint Shopping Centre (Windradyne), the Kelso shopping Centre (Kelso), Trinity Heights Shopping Centre (Kelso) as well as a mix of smaller convenience stores.

The Central Business District leads directly off the Great Western Highway and is of great heritage significance. The conservation area of Bathurst City includes the commercial and civic heart of Bathurst and reflects the nineteenth century development of this important New South Wales regional centre. Bathurst was the first settlement founded west of the Blue Mountains. It is a place that developed a high level of prosperity during the latter half of the nineteenth century, particularly as a consequence of the gold rushes of the Central West Region as well as the pastoral and other industries of the Bathurst district. Incorporating a wide range of building forms and types and styles, the area has a richness of cultural features.

With its historic character, the cohesiveness created the red brick used in many of the buildings, the landmark qualities of the spires, domes, massing and other attributes of a number of the buildings, the inherent qualities of the architectural styles represented, and the fine parks and streets, the conservation area is a part of Bathurst that has strong streetscape and other aesthetic qualities.
